Connecting the DJI O4 Air Unit with Goggles & Remote ControllerUpdated 2 hours ago
This guide explains how to connect the DJI O4 Air Unit (Standard and Pro) with DJI Goggles Integra, Goggles 2, Goggles 3, or Goggles N3, as well as with the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 and 3.
Once all devices are activated, updated, and correctly bound, the drone is immediately ready to fly – no update or adjustment of the Flight Controller is necessary.
0) Safety & Preparation
Attach antennas before connecting the FPV drone or Air Unit to a battery. Without antennas, overheating and damage may occur.
Remove propellers for all ground work.
Air Units heat up quickly on the ground since no internal fan is built into the drone. The binding process should therefore be completed within a few minutes.
For activation and firmware updates, no battery is required – a USB-C connection is sufficient. Connect a battery only when binding Air Unit ⇄ Goggles ⇄ Controller.
Remote Controllers – RC 2 and RC 3
DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 (RC 2): Used with the DJI O3 Air Unit and the DJI Goggles 2 or Goggles Integra. It is compatible only with these goggles.
DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 (RC 3): The newer version, designed specifically for the DJI O4 Air Unit in combination with DJI Goggles 3 and Goggles N3. It is not compatible with Goggles 2 or Integra.
O4 Air Unit vs. O4 Air Unit Pro
O4 Air Unit (Lite): More compact version, with slightly reduced features (one antenna, shorter range).
O4 Air Unit Pro: Enhanced version with longer range, two antennas, and higher performance, designed for more demanding applications.
Inside the drone, the Air Unit is installed either in the front third or the rear third of the frame, depending on the model.
The USB-C port in the middle of the drone does not belong to the Air Unit, but to the Flight Controller (FC). This port can only be used to access Betaflight or other FC settings.
For activation, updates, and linking the Air Unit, always use the USB-C port on the Air Unit itself.
1) Software: Activation & Firmware Updates
1.1 Install DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series)
Download and install the software from DJI (Windows/macOS).
Start DJI Assistant 2 and log in with your DJI account.
1.2 Activate & Update the Air Unit
Connect the Air Unit to the computer via USB-C.
Select the device in DJI Assistant 2 and run Activate.
Then run Firmware Update and wait until “Completed” is displayed.
Note: Non-activated Air Units are limited to 20 mW and block menu access in the goggles.
1.3 Activate & Update Goggles
Goggles 3 & Goggles N3: via the DJI Fly App (connect smartphone to goggles via USB-C) or via DJI Assistant 2 on a computer.
Goggles 2 & Goggles Integra: via DJI Assistant 2 on a computer.
1.4 Activate & Update Remote Controllers
DJI FPV RC 3: Connect via USB-C to the computer, start DJI Assistant 2, log in, run Activate & update firmware.
DJI FPV RC 2: Same procedure as RC 3.
2) Compatibility
Air Unit | Goggles | Recommended Remote Controller |
---|---|---|
O4 / O4 Pro | Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 | RC 3 |
O4 / O4 Pro | Goggles 2 or Goggles Integra | RC 2 |
Important:
RC 3 is not compatible with Goggles 2/Integra.
RC 2 is not compatible with Goggles 3/N3.
3) Linking (Binding)
For the connection between goggles, Air Unit, and remote controller to work, the correct transmission mode must be set in the goggles.
For DJI O4 Air Unit and O4 Air Unit Pro: Select O4 mode in the goggles.
If the goggles are still in O3/Legacy mode, they cannot connect to an O4 Air Unit.
The mode can be switched directly in the goggles menu under Transmission. After changing the mode, the goggles restart automatically.
A) With Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 + RC 3
Put goggles into link mode: Hold down the power button until a continuous tone/LED blinking appears.
Bind Air Unit: Power on the drone with a battery → briefly press the link button on the Air Unit → LED blinks → after a few seconds, the live image appears in the goggles.
Bind RC 3: Turn on RC 3 and hold down the power button until it beeps/LEDs blink → put goggles back into link mode → wait until the beeping stops.
Done: Live video visible, control active.
B) With Goggles 2 or Goggles Integra + RC 2
Put goggles into link mode (via menu).
Bind Air Unit: Power on the drone with a battery → press the link button on the Air Unit → LED blinks → image appears in the goggles.
Bind RC 2: Turn on RC 2 and hold down the power button until it beeps/LEDs blink → put goggles back into link mode → wait until the beeping stops.
Done: Live video visible, control active.
4) Common Issues
Only 20 mW and no menu access possible: Air Unit and goggles have not been activated yet.
No RC link: Check if the correct combination is used (RC2 with G2/Integra or RC3 with G3/N3).
Air Unit overheating on the ground: Perform the process quickly and ensure good ventilation.
Goggles not connecting to Air Unit: Often caused by the wrong transmission mode. For the DJI O4 Air Unit and O4 Air Unit Pro, the goggles must be in O4 mode. If they are still in O3/Legacy mode, no connection is possible. Always check under Transmission and restart the goggles after changing modes.
5) Important
No firmware update of the Flight Controller (FC) is required – our drones are preconfigured.
The drone is only ready to fly once all DJI devices are activated and connected.
